Help others pray through music!
The music ministry exists to help all who worship at St. Jude to grow as disciples of Christ, especially through music. Singers and instrumentalists offer their time and talent to lead the music at liturgy. Please contact the parish office at 517 669-8335 ext. 10.
St. Gregory Choir: This choir is open to parishioners junior high school age and older; younger musicians with interest will also be considered. We sing a wide variety of music both old and new, serving at the 11:00 AM Mass most Sundays and at major feasts from approximately Labor Day through Pentecost. Our choir patron, Pope St. Gregory the Great, was a liturgical reformer and compiled the melodies that bear his name, “Gregorian” chant. The ability to read music and previous choral experience are both welcome, but if you have neither, being part of the choir is a great way to develop both! Far more important is a willingness to grow and learn together with other members of the Body of Christ. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM, and consistent rehearsal attendance is expected.
All Souls Choir: This choir has served only occasionally in recent years, and Fr. Bob has identified it as a special priority for 2016-2017 to seek volunteers who are skilled on piano or organ and as cantors. The All Souls Choir is made up of people who sing together for parish funerals. Generally, members are contacted by phone or email soon after a funeral is scheduled and rehearse together one hour before the funeral. All ages and levels of experience are welcome. You need not participate in every funeral.
St. Cecilia Handbell Choir: This choir, under the patronage of the Roman martyr St. Cecilia, is also open to parishioners high school age and older. Previous musical experience is not necessary; however, participants should expect to learn a variety of skills, including reading music and various ringing techniques, as needed. Consistent attendance at rehearsals on Monday evenings at 7:00 PM is essential. The bell choir plays for various Masses about once a month and serves from approximately Labor Day through Pentecost.
Small Ensembles: Small ensembles serve at various Masses throughout the year, usually meeting an hour before Mass to warm up and occasionally preparing simpler choral music. This is a great way to get a first taste of serving in the music ministry in a group setting without needing to make a long-term commitment. Singers and instrumentalists are welcome. Both Steve and accompanist Laura Masterson provide direction for these ensembles.
Cantors: The cantor is a leader of congregational song. Besides singing with the entire congregation, the cantor often sings in alternation with them (for example, singing the verses of the responsorial psalm and inviting the assembly to sing the refrain). A strong voice and good musical skills are required.
St. Peter Praise Band: As of summer 2016, there is interest in forming a new liturgical ensemble at St. Jude with a rock band instrumentation: electric guitars, bass, percussion, and a small number of singers to lead the assembly’s sung prayer in this musical style. Tentative plans include a weekly rehearsal (time TBD) and playing for a couple of Masses monthly. Contact Steve to participate.
Interested in being involved musically and have an idea besides the ones you see listed above—perhaps a children’s hand-chime choir, or learning how to transfer your solo piano skills to accompanying at Mass?
