This ministry began in our parish in 2006 and was formed as a means to combine compassion and the love of knitting, crocheting and sewing into a prayerful ministry and spiritual practice. This ministry reaches out to those in need of comforting and solace, as well as in celebration and joy. Many blessings are prayed into every shawl and quilt and then the shawls and quilts are blessed by a gathering of ministry members before they are given away. Prayer shawls and quilts can be given to those undergoing medical procedures, as a comfort after a loss or in times of stress, during an illness and recovery, for prayer or meditation or in celebration of special events such as adult Baptism or Confirmation or other major life events. Prayer shawls and prayer quilts a visible signs of the prayers of the parish community for the person who receives them.
The Prayer Shawl and Quilt Ministry gathers for workdays twice each month one Monday and one Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm (except during the summer months) in the community center to work on prayer shawls and quilts. No experience is needed to participate in this ministry. Participants in this ministry have found a special fellowship as they work together to pray and stitch. Over 800 prayer shawls and prayer quilts have been given away to parishioners and to family and friends around the country since the ministry began in our parish. Anyone interested in participating or requesting a prayer shawl or prayer quilt may call Terry Humenik or Jackie Urbain at (517) 669-5060 or Terry Angwin (517) 669-9745.
Donations of cotton fabric and worsted or homespun yarn are always appreciated.
If you choose to knit or crochet a prayer shawl at home please remember that Prayer Shawl dimensions should be approximately 26-30 inches wide and 70-72 inches long before fringe. We have found that smaller prayer shawls do not cover adequatley. Please call Jackie Urbain about dontated yarn for use in making prayer shawls.
