The music ministry exists to help draw all who worship the Lord into the fullness of liturgical, musical prayer. Singers and instrumentalists volunteer their time and talent to lead the music at liturgy. Please contact Steve Kasperick-Postellon, Director of Music Minstries, at 206-426-7341 or kpsteve@gmail.com, with any questions.
Adult Choir: St. Augustine reminds us that “singing is for the one who loves.” The Adult Choir is open to all adult parishioners. The ability to read music and previous choral experience are both welcome, but if you have neither, being part of the choir is a great way to develop both! Far more important is a willingness to grow and learn together with other members of the Body of Christ. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM, and consistent rehearsal attendance is expected. The choir serves at 11:00 AM Mass most Sundays and at major feasts from approximately Labor Day through Pentecost.
Bell Choir: This choir is open to adults and high school students. Previous musical experience is not necessary; however, participants should expect to learn a variety of skills, including reading music and various ringing techniques, as needed. Attendance at rehearsals on Monday evenings at 7:00 PM is essential. The bell choir plays for various Masses about once a month and serves from approximately Labor Day through Pentecost.
Cantors: “The cantor is both a singer and a leader of congregational song” (Sing to the Lord 37). Besides singing with the entire congregation, she or he often sings in alternation with them (for example, singing the verses of the responsorial psalm and inviting the assembly to sing the refrain). A strong voice and good musical skills are required.
Youth: Many opportunities exist for young people to be involved in the music ministry at St. Jude. Laura Masterson directs two ensembles: a student choir for children in grades 4 through 8 (rehearsals Tuesdays 6:00 to 7:00 PM; sings twice monthly throughout the school year) and a high school ensemble (rehearsals arranged according to availability; sings twice monthly throughout the school year). Additionally, a youth ensemble (under the leadership of Jack Armstrong and Jim Wozniak) is open to high school and junior high singers and instrumentalists, as well as any adults who enjoy working with this age group; this group (which has recently played primarily for special occasions) hopes to expand this year to playing once or twice a month.
Interested in being involved musically and have an idea besides the ones you see listed above—perhaps a children’s hand-chime choir, small ensembles during the summer, or learning how to transfer your solo piano skills to accompanying at Mass? Feel free to contact Steve with your ideas; we’ll work together to praise God by serving his holy people.
